Age 42 is precisely when many of us go through a major life change. Everything gets turned on its head. Some call it a mid-life crises. I call it an emotional and spiritual awakening. For others, it is a dark night of the soul.
It is a biologically scheduled shift like wisdom teeth. You were so content to be a good mom. You were so content to pursue business success. You were living the life of the dream — not your dream, mind you — but that dream. The one that “they” told you was the dream to dream. You were living the life of “should”.
Then, overnight, your own dream kicks in and tries to take over. This is a very fragile time. Many of us never make it over the bridge. The big pharmaceutical companies love this age. Some of us self medicate with or without the help of the western medical profession. And, some of us break through.
There is living the life of the dream. And then there is living the life of your own dreams.
Its a scary passage. It requires great courage. You travel this journey alone (even though there is plenty of skilled counsel to be found on the topic these days).
Most of us step into our twenties and thirties doing what we are “supposed to” be doing. We want the same things. We pursue the same activities. We let our freak flag fly inside of a large herd of freak flag wearers.
But the journey of emotional and spiritual awakening takes you on a path not followed by the herd. The true visionaries, the ones who lead even long after they are “dead”, spend significant time in solitude while they are alive. They knew how to get quiet and follow the beat of their own drum, deep down inside.
I don’t have any evidence for it but I think that as a culture, as a society of human beings on the planet, there is a larger emotional and spiritual awakening afoot. We have reached critical mass. It’s as if human consciousness as a whole has reached “42 years old”.
It looks like a mid-life crises. It looks like a dark night of the soul. For sure, it is an emotional and spiritual awakening at the collective level. It is a biologically scheduled shift.
What’s it been, like 60 million years since the last major extinction of species on this planet? We are in one of those right now, at least according to the scientists who study these things.
Ignore the noise of the rabble of the crowd. Go within and listen.
“There’s something happening here. What it is ain’t exactly clear. There’s a man with a gun over there, telling me I got to beware. I think its time we stop children, what’s that sound? Everybody look what’s going down.” (hat tip: Buffalo Springfield)
